AWARDS & DECORATIONS
The Navy Cross is presented for exceptionally distinguished performance of duty contributing to National security or defense of the United States. The medal was created on July 9,1970. Over 2.3 million sailors and Marines served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Of this number, there have been only 123 Navy Crosses publicly awarded during the Vietnam War (1958-73).
The Bronze Star Medal "V" may be awarded for acts of heroism, acts of merit, or meritorious service in a combat zone. When awarded for acts of heroism, the medal is awarded with the "V" device. The medal is the fifth-highest combat decoration and the tenth highest U.S. military award in order of precedence.
The Meritorious Service Medal is presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States subsequent to January 16, 1969.
The Air Medal (6) was created in 1942 and is awarded for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. The award criteria is for one award of the Air Medal (1) per each naval vessel or three enemy aircraft in flight confirmed destroyed (2) per twenty-five (25) operational flights during which exposure to enemy fire is probable and expected or (3) per one-hundred (100) operational flights during which exposure to enemy fire is not expected.
Navy Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon - The Navy citation was established by Executive Order 9050 on 6 February 1942. The ribbon is worn by only by those Navy and Marine service members who were assigned to the unit for the "award period" of the award.
Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 Stars) - Navy and U.S. Marine Corps commands may recommend any Navy or Marine Corps unit for the NUC that has distinguished itself by outstanding heroism in action against the enemy, but not sufficient to justify the award of the Presidential Unit Citation.
Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 Stars) - The Navy MUC was authorized by SECNAV Notice 1650 on 17 July 1967 and is awarded to any unit of the Navy or Marine Corps that has distinguished itself, under combat or noncombat conditions, by either valorous or meritorious achievement, which renders the unit outstanding compared to other units performing similar service, but not sufficient to justify award of the Navy Unit Commendation.
National Defense Service Medal is awarded to anyone who serves on active duty in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War or War on Terrorism.
Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross (Silver and Bronze Star) is also known as the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross or Vietnam Cross of Gallantry is a military decoration of the former Government of South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam). The medal was created on August 15,1950 and was awarded to military personnel, civilians, and Armed Forces units and organizations in recognition of deeds of valor or heroic conduct while in combat with the enemy.
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal was established on Dec. 4, 1961, to be awarded to members of the United States armed forces who, after July 1, 1958, have participated in a United States military operation and encountered foreign armed opposition, or were in danger of hostile action by foreign armed forces.
Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation Ribbon is awarded to personnel in the South Vietnamese military and Allied military units that have been cited and presented a decoration which is prescribed to be awarded on a collective basis. Known as the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, the Unit Citation Emblem in the colors of the Gallantry Cross with Palm, was created on January 20,1968 and was issued with the Gallantry Cross ribbon bar with a bronze palm and a gold frame.
Sea Service Deployment Ribbon - The Sea Service Deployment Ribbon is granted to any member of the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps assigned to a deployable unit and is forward-deployed for a period of either 90 consecutive days or two periods of at least 80 days each within a given 12-month period; or 6 months stationed overseas in a forward deployed location.
Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation Ribbon (First Class) is a decoration presented by the government of South Vietnam to recognize a units outstanding civic service to the state or civil service of great asset to the South Vietnamese cause.
Vietnam Service Medal (8 bronze campaign stars) There are a total of 17 campaign stars authorized for the Vietnam Service Medal. Personnel are authorized one bronze campaign star for each qualifying campaign with a silver star worn in lieu of five bronze stars.
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal was created in 1949, and awarded to French military personnel during the First Indochina War. During the Vietnam War (Second Indochina War), the South Vietnamese government awarded the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (I960-) to members of the South Vietnamese military for wartime service and on March 24,1966, to members of the U.S. military for support of operations in Vietnam.
